The town of Arezzo
The little town of Arezzo is thus far an unknown corner of Tuscany but it hides lots of art and history treasures.
Few people know that Arezzo has been one of the most important cities of Italy in the past, during the Etruscan, the Roman and the Medieval period.
The town is visited above all for its famous fresco cycle of “The Legend of the True Cross” by Piero della Francesca, one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian painting. Exceptional archaeological finds like the Chimaera (now in Florence) or the Minerva, have been found here in 16th century. In the late 13th century Cimabue realized his famous Crucifix, now in San Domenico church, used as a model for his later famous Crucifix in Santa Croce in Florence, damaged in the Arno flood (1966).
Despite the town came under the control of Florence in 1384, artistic production didn’t stop. During the Renaissance period Arezzo gave birth to Giorgio Vasari, the famous art historian, painter and architect; the house where he lived can be visited.
Twice a year a medieval tournament take place in Piazza Grande, the colourful Saracen Joust, a very exciting event that I highly recommend to attend! And if you are looking for some tuscan vintage clothes, books or furnitures don’t forget the prestigious Antiques Fair, which takes place every first Sunday of the month (and the day before).

The province of Arezzo
The Arezzo area is divided in four valley, separated by just as many mountain chains: the Casentino Valley where the Arno River rises, the Valdarno, the Valdichiana in the South and in the East the Valtiberina, which reported in its name the one of the Tiber river.
